Search Engines, what do they know? … really

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

This just might be the most understated problem of the internet today. Search Engines do not know anything, at least if you look at the biggies (g, y!, l). They just serve a reply which is calculated in a way they can´t explain because it´s their secrets.

So how will I as a user ever be able to related to that reply?

The only thing I can do is start using some arbitrary “algorithms” in my head. Like; “oh, that looks creditable”, “I think I remember that site” “wasn´t that the article I got a tip about from my friend”

wwwraal is not just the solution to this major flaw of search, it´s the service that will bring you, the user, back in the driving seat.

We sure have done some progress

I sitting on my commuter train, with my Turbo 3G modem. It feels a bit 1995 trying to connect to the internet via the good old telephone icon on my Powerbook. But, hey, from 14.4 kbits over the phone line to 1.5 mbits over the mobile network in a bit over ten years, thats nice. So what will wwwraal bring to this party? A lot we hope.

Being mobile has its ups and downs, coverage is a bit so so, bandwidth is not what we are getting used to over the wlan at home and those thirty seconds to connect feels like forever. (and acctually, I was supposed to post this yesterday, but got no connection). For our returning readers you know that wwwraal always claims to have some revolutionary technology solving a bunch of issues of the web experience and of course we also have something in store for mobile user.

As always we can´t get in to the specifics, but we can assure you that a thing called ACP will really change your surf patterns and the user experience of mobile computing. Thanks for now and stay tuned.

Books and pages

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I´ve never been much of a book consumer and since my son came in to my life the the amount of books I finished sure has not increase. So I was thinking about books and pages as a metaphor for websites and webpages. Have you ever considered how many pages there are in your library? No, I thought not. It´s not very relevant is it? Same thing; have you ever considered the number of books you have. Well, some of you might raise your hands, books are nice and a lot of books are even nicer.

So now; can you tell me about your 10 favorite books? I´ll bet you can! Why; I would guess it´s because you like them, based on quality of content of course.

So, to come to something resembling a conclusion, it´s not the number of pages, it´s not the number of books. It´s all about quality of content, the author, the mood you were in etc etc. But still, you keep your other books around, because they look nice and you never know… someday…
